Constructing the Word “Flitter”, Take two!

So I took my installment in a whole different direction the second week, actually, the last 5 days before the project was due.

It all started when I was talking to drew, we were discussing how we were going to go more in depth to our word and he asked me about my word, Flitter. So I started describing the word and as I was describing it I said “In fact, the word Flitter makes me think of tongues.” And he agreed. At first it meant nothing and I continued thinking about my dilemma that was going more in depth with what I already started. In that back of my mind though, I kept thinking. Flitter, I said flitter, I felt the way my tongue formed flitter against the roof of my mouth. As i said it…. my tongue…. flittered. And so began my installment. I dropped my other project, fascinated suddenly with tongues and mouths, a phase I thought I grew out of in middle school. Well, I guess it made a surprise visit.

I borrowed a camera from another friend and went around asking people to say the word. Getting people to say the word wasn’t difficult. I did find it curious though that people would be willing to have me video tape their mouth and afterwards ask me what the word meant. But then as I thought about it even more, I wanted videos of tongues just dancing as tongues do. That was a much more difficult request. I spent the next few days asking strangers and friends for a look inside their mouth. Some were unwilling and some… were too willing. The day before I compiled my work and put together my video. New to the movie making experience, I wish that I had more time. I wish I had thought of it sooner to play with it more and build on it more. I may still move forward with the word Flitter.

One thing is sure, I’ll never forget the word.

“Territory”

Leaves swaying in the breeze
Freshly cut grass tickling the nose
A life choice, a turning stone to seize

Flowers decorate the lawn
Like the joy in the air
No thought of the foregone

The rush of 100 faces
The throbbing feeling of war
Everyone on a last name bases

The triumphant march crescendos
A thundering sound of victory
The use of slurring innuendos

The smell of perseverance
Sweat dripping from the brow
There is no interference

The warmth of the setting sun
Like the warmth of company
The sound of the whistle and it’s done

Constructing the word “Flitter”

For my project I looked at the word flitter in many senses. I related it to the line by using the beer cans from the woods. I washed them out, this was disgusting, 30 can’s of complete and utter filth. After that I strung them up by their tabs and tied them into a tree. Being short I enlisted help of my engineer friend who really likes to climb tree’s.

Beer cans: Glittery Litter that Flitters.

Well picking up beer cans in the forest I was thinking to myself, How I must be the only one up there removing these can’s. The ironic thing about this was by morning someone had come and taken the time to take all the cans down. No one but myself has taken the time to remove the cans from the forest but when the issue is unavoidable and shoved in the faces of other’s the idea is taboo.

I asked passer-bys who took interest in my piece what they thought it represented. Some people did say they thought it was a litter related piece, some on the other hand thought that I was trying to grow beer from a tree, or something a long this process. I assumed these people were part of the problem and not the solution.

As well as later that night, as I was returning from my class at 8. The campus was encompassed in darkness only to be lit by the moon and the road lamps, my tree, on a hill didn’t get much light and was a bleak silhouette from far away. But the cans blowing in the breeze caught the light and shined. A true definition of “Flitter” in fact, as the night when on in it’s “Wasted Wednesday” activities, easily distracted drunk kids played around the tree. Fascinated in the beer cans and attracted by there shine. I found humor in this.

The alfred line diverges through both Alfred University and Alfred State. It cuts through, building, lawns, and forest. Well exploring the woods behind Alfred University I noticed the litter of typical college life. Well, I can only assume typical college life. Drinking in the woods is sketchy. The metallic shine of the cans fits the word flitter, they caught my eye from anywhere. I’m interested in the social aspects of the line, I want to shed light to the young adults of Alfred and to the world the life that is being lead here. In their fuddle attempts to forget their own problems well they create more. They create problems for the world that can’t speak up for themselves, so I will use the can’s luster to make a social statement and try to get a reaction from the students of Alfred.

Exploring the Line

The line is a mile to two mile imaginary line cutting through the town of Alfred. It cuts through buildings, fields, dorms, and forest. At one point everyone in the town of Alfred has crossed the line. And at any time of day you can watch art students trek the line, looking for objects, inspiration, and sometimes just to walk the line.

As I walked the line I noticed a lot of different fascinating things, I saw into some peoples lives for a brief second. We were connect for a moment through a patch of land. I found the social aspect of the line fascinating. I saw the amount of litter in the woods. Unruly college kids drinking their brain cells away in the company of birds and bees. I collected beer cans and other “junk” that people disregarded and left in my path.
